With only a few days left in February, it is time to start making plans for March. March is National Nutrition Month, and is the perfect time to find little ways that you can make healthy choices. National Nutrition Month was started by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as a way to call attention to the need to make informed food choices and develop good eating and physical activity habits.
Keep these tips in mind to help you make healthy choices each day.
- Make a plan – creating a plan on Sunday can help you stay organized all week long. Create a meal plan, and go shopping to ensure that you have all the ingredients needed for the whole week. Making a plan will help to reduce the stress of deciding on dinner after work.
- Stock your kitchen – if your fridge and cabinet are stocked full of healthy food choices, you are less likely to reach for an unhealthy snack. Prepare everything you need to throw together a quick salad or sandwich so that you do not have to search around when you get hungry.
- Fill up on fruits and veggies – cut up fresh fruits and veggies and put them at the front of your fridge. If they are easy to get to, you will be more likely to eat them before they go bad. Create “snack packs” of fruit and veggies that you can grab before you head out the door.
- Earn your calories – burning enough calories throughout the day will help you maintain a healthy weight. The more calories you burn throughout the day, the more you will be able to eat without gaining weight.
