Kick Bad Car Habits and Keep Your Vehicle Running Right!

  • by

You rely on your vehicle to get to work, pick your kids up from school and get your pooch to the vet when it’s time for his checkup. Your car is the center of everything you do, so you want the parts to hold out for as long as possible. If you want to keep your car from turning into a lemon, stop doing these five things.

  1. Riding the brakes downhill. If you’re going down a long hill, instead of pressing on the brake the entire time, alternate between braking and coasting. This will keep them from overheating and wearing out prematurely.
  2. Skipping the oil change. Try to change your oil every three to five thousand miles. Regular oil changes can increase the life of your engine.
  3. Pressure washing the engine. A pressure washer hose is powerful. If you spray it on the hoses, seals and electrical parts of your engine you might knock something loose. Instead of using a high-powered hose to clean your engine, opt for a garden hose.
  4. Skipping the parking brake. When you park on an incline, it strains your transmission and wears it down. Applying the parking brake locks the wheels and takes the pressure off the transmission.
  5. Ignoring car sounds. If your car starts making funny sounds, have it checked out. The more you pretend not to hear the rattling and clanking in your engine, the worse the problem will get.
